What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews instead of scrolling a page of links. AEO is how you make sure those tools name your business when they answer.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content and website so AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, cite your business directly in the answers they generate. Where traditional SEO fights to rank a link that someone clicks, AEO aims to make your content the source the AI quotes back to the person asking. Same goal, more customers, but a different finish line.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
SEO ranks blue links; AEO earns citations inside answers. With SEO, the search engine returns a ranked list and the user chooses which link to click, so position on the page is everything. With AEO, an AI reads many sources, writes a single summarized answer, and names a handful of them. There may be no list to scroll at all.
The two are not rivals. AEO is built on the same foundation as good SEO, fast pages, crawlable content, real authority, but it leans harder on three things: answer-first writing, structured data the machine can parse, and a consistent, verifiable identity across the web. If your SEO and AI search foundation is solid, you are already most of the way there.
Why does AEO matter right now?
Because search behavior is shifting fast. A growing share of questions that used to start in a search box now start in an AI chat, and the AI hands back a written answer with a few cited sources instead of ten links. If your business is not one of those cited sources, you are invisible in that moment, even if you rank well in classic search results.
Google AI Overviews now sit at the very top of many results pages, summarizing answers before any link appears. Perplexity is built entirely around cited answers. ChatGPT and Copilot increasingly pull live web sources into their responses. Being the business that gets named in those answers is the new front page.
How do you actually do AEO?
You write and mark up content so a machine can lift a clean, quotable answer from it. The tactics below are the core of how STR8LINE approaches answer engine optimization for service businesses.
1. Lead with the answer
Structure pages around real questions, then answer each one in the first sentence or two before adding detail. Use a clear question as the heading ("How much does a new website cost?") and give the direct answer immediately. AI engines extract these tight question-and-answer pairs far more readily than they parse a long, meandering paragraph.
2. Publish FAQ and how-to content
Dedicated FAQ sections and step-by-step how-to guides map almost perfectly to the kinds of prompts people type into AI tools. They give the engine self-contained, citable chunks instead of forcing it to stitch an answer together from scattered sentences.
3. Add schema markup
Structured data tells machines exactly what your content is. Use FAQPage schema on FAQ blocks, Article or BlogPosting schema on posts, and Organization schema to define your business as a clear entity. This page uses all three. Markup removes ambiguity, and less ambiguity means more confident citations.
4. Ship an llms.txt file
An llms.txt file at the root of your domain is an emerging convention: a plain-text map that points AI crawlers to your most important, answer-ready pages. Think of it as a curated table of contents written for language models rather than for human visitors.
5. Strengthen E-E-A-T and entity consistency
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust still decide who gets cited. Keep your business name, address, services and key facts identical across your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social platforms. When the same entity shows up consistently everywhere, AI engines trust it enough to name it.
6. Stay crawlable for AI bots
If the engines cannot read your pages, they cannot cite them. Confirm your robots.txt allows the major AI crawlers, GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and GoogleOther, rather than blocking them by accident.
7. Publish dated, stat-rich content
Answer engines favor content that is current and specific. Include publish and updated dates, cite concrete numbers, and refresh posts as facts change. Fresh, fact-dense pages read as more reliable, and reliable pages get quoted.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, AEO complements traditional SEO, it does not replace it. People still click links, still compare options, and still land on your site directly from classic search. The smart move is to do both at once: keep ranking for the searchers who scroll links, and structure that same content so the AI engines cite you for the searchers who never do. Done well, one content effort wins on both fronts.

AEO FAQ
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring your content and website so that AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, cite your business directly in the answers they generate for users. Instead of competing only for blue links, you become the source the AI quotes.
Traditional SEO aims to rank your page high in a list of links so a person clicks through. AEO aims to get your content extracted and cited inside an AI-generated answer, where there may be no list of links at all. SEO and AEO share many foundations, fast, crawlable, authoritative content, but AEO leans harder on clear answer-first structure, schema markup and entity consistency.
Publish clear, answer-first content that states the answer in the first sentence under a question heading, add FAQ and how-to sections, mark it up with FAQPage and Article schema, keep your business name and details consistent across the web, and allow AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and GoogleOther in your robots.txt so these tools can read and quote your pages.
